ARSHDEEP SINGH

Meet this 10-year-old who won the Young Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2018 Award

Arshdeep Singh from Jalandhar in Punjab has made India proud by winning the Wildlife Photographer of The Year Award in 10 years and under age category. He won Junior Wildlife Photographer of the year (Asia) in under-18 age category for his stunning snap titled ‘Pipe Owls’. He also won Junior Comedy Wildlife Photographer of the year award (under 16) at world level. He got this award for his image called "Owl on the Wall" where he captured an Owl doing nature's call. Wildlife Photographer of the Year happens to be the most prestigious Photography Award in the world which is organized by Britain’s Natural History Museum, London. The organizers appreciated Arshdeep’s keen observational skills.

The Award winning photograph was taken outside Kapurthala in Punjab, showing two spotted owlets closely sitting & peeping from inside a pipe. When asked about the photograph, he says, “I and my father regularly visit a wetland in Kapurthala for nature photography. One such day, when I saw a ‘spotted owl’ flying inside a tube, I told my father to stop the car. He did not believe me in the beginning. We waited for some time until they came out again and soon I took a shot from inside the car through the window.” While enquiring about how this interest began in him, he says his father gifted him a camera and a lens on his 5th birthday. He had the interest in photography seeing his father taking photographs. He started clicking pictures of random things which he saw around his house - birds, butterflies, macro shots etc. Once when he started having the real interest in photography, his father took him along for Nature Photography.

This young kid says age is not a barrier for becoming a wildlife photographer and anybody who could master the art of Patience can click photographs no matter what their age is. Inspired by his father, who is also a wildlife photographer, the duo often travels together to capture nature. Apart from his father he follows Tim Laman who is an American Wildlife Photojournalist and has won Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award in 2016. This passionate young photographer’s works have been published in top International photography magazines like Lonely Planet UK, Germany and India, and BBC Wildlife UK. Lions, Tigers, Leopards have been caught on camera by him; however, Arshdeep reveals he is particularly passionate about capturing the birds. Parents of Arshdeep – Randeep Singh and Supreety Kaur considers this Award as a big achievement for their son. They say “We are very proud of our son. Very few children get this type of opportunity and we are so blessed as parents.”

Indeed this child has made India proud!
