MOMINA ASAD

This 23-year-old kick-started her art business in Canada with no help and resources!

“Painting is by nature a luminous language” – Says Momina (23), who runs a mini Calligraphy and Art Business in Canada. This full-time undergraduate student pursuing a double majors degree in Biology and Environmental Sciences started off her business little less than a year in Social Media with nothing fancy, but just a few common paints from the superstore and a bunch of plain cotton canvases, put together with some descent photography and editing skills. Little did she knew that it would take her to the next level in life. Her studies don’t usually leave her with enough time to dedicate towards artwork. However, she has always been passionate about painting since she was a child and growing up she always wanted to incorporate it into her life in some way, if not as a profession. Momina usually plays around with colors and the strokes of paintbrush during free time. “Mominarts” has been up and running for a little less than a year and it has been an interesting journey so far for this young talent. It was when she entered her final session of University last year, she came up with this idea of making a personal art page on Instagram and kicking into a side business with whatever resources she had. As a student, she did not have money to invest nor she asked her parents for help because her family moved to Canada almost four years back and they were still in the settling phase when she came up with this idea.

She tried her best not to overburden them financially and make a side earning for herself independently to support them. Over the course of these past few months, Momina focused on putting up quality content on her page and not on the number of followers she gains. She always aimed at making personalized pieces that are close to her heart and bring positivity into people’s lives. Her works are promoted mainly through her University’s student organizations and through word of mouth. Now Momina is happy that her business is slowly picking up pace and beginning to establish itself. Every time Momina felt she is not making enough sales, she reminded herself that things take time and Mominarts started just a few months back. Now, she is one among the well-known freelance artists in Toronto, Canada.

“To all the young ones reading this, if there is an idea that sparks your mind, just follow your heart and go for it. Most successful people today started at some point with little to no help and resources. It will take time and there will be dark days, but if you’re strong and dedicated, things will eventually work out for the good!” Momina says.
